Election observers and veteran politicians have criticized that the election will be unfair and biased if the administrative staff and fire brigade officers are assigned to serve as polling officers in the elections to be held by the military council.
The spokesperson of the junta Union Election Commission, U Khin Maung Oo, said at a press conference on July 26 that administrative staff and fire fighters will be assigned as polling officers apart from educational staff.
An election observer criticized that only educational staff should be polling officers at the voting booth, and if administrative staff and fire brigade members are assigned, it will not be a fair election, and third-party organizations or volunteers should be there.
The Junta UEC said it has taken action against some polling station officials who committed illegal activities in the previous 2020 general election.
U Pe Than, a veteran politician, also expressed his view that the general administration staff and fire brigade are part of the government, so if they are on duty at the polling booth during the election, it will not be a free and fair election.
In the 2020 general election, there were more than 39,000 polling stations nationwide, and school teachers from the Department of Education were assigned to serve there.
But the military seized power over the claims of electoral fraud.
The military council that seized power on the pretext of voter fraud has promised to hold another election in 2023.
The National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that it will use various ways to prevent the election to be held by the military council.
