Mawlamyine, April (21)

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), more than 560,000 people have been displaced across the country in more than a year since the military coup, due to violent conflict and insecurity.

Of those, more than 300,000 residents have been displaced in Chin, Magway and Sagaing Regions, UNOCHA said on April 19.

In addition, armed conflict has destroyed residences, including religious buildings. More than 8,000 civilian homes and other buildings were destroyed.

IDPs are fleeing to refugee camps as well as nearby woodlands and need medical assistance, an representative from the Sagaing Region refugee camp said.

“Urgent patients have to be rushed to Kalay Township. There are only a few injections and medicines for illness and pain. More than 2,000 of us live in makeshift tents on campus, so we have to worry about infectious diseases during the rainy season, so we need to bring mineral salt packs,” he added.

The UNOCHA says it is prepared for displaced persons to respond efficiently in disaster-prone areas in the event of a pre-monsoon catastrophe.

A total of more than 900,000 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) have fled their residences in Myanmar since the military coup, the UNOCHA reported.
