Four vehicles set on fire amid skirmishes on Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Highway

Mawlamyine, April (5)

The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) clashed with regime troops on the Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Highway on the morning of April 4, according to travelers.

As a result of the fighting, four vehicles, including a passenger van, were set ablaze at the bottom of Seik Phuu Mountain near the Taw Naw Waterfall on the Asian Highway.

Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, were reportedly trapped during the fighting and some turned around, according to truck drivers.

Truck drivers stated they left because a junta-controlled daily announced on April 4 that trucks and light cars were travelling routinely and the flow of products on the Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Highway is normal.

Due to an influx of troops from the military council, the Karen National Union (KNU) has stated that use of the Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Highway and the Myawaddy-Wal Lay Road will be suspended beginning March 27.

Fighting erupted on the Myawaddy-Kawkareik Asian Highway in the days before April 1 and two vehicles were set on fire and two civilians killed.
