Malaria strucks over 150 IDPs in Taungpyauk, in desperate need of medical help

Mawlamyine, April (22)

Malaria has infected over 150 IDPs in the refugee camp in Tanintharyi Region’s Taungpyauk area of Thayet Chaung Township and they are in urgent need of medical assistance, according to the humanitarian workers.

Malaria began to spread in children aged five to the elderly in the Taungpyauk area as a result of the storm and rain in late March.

“The IDPs are infected with malaria and require assistance because there is little medication to treat them. Malaria affects children as young as five years old and adults. Malaria and other seasonal flu medicines are in short supply,” he continued.

Refugees suffering from malaria may develop tolerance to the drug and the disease can affect the human brain, resulting in death.

According to a local resident, the IDPs in Taungpyauk district are suffering from diarrhea and seasonal flu, and they will be arrested by the military council if they leave the area for medical treatment.

Fighting between the military council and local militia forces in Taungpyaw has sent over 3,000 refugees to adjacent woodlands and refugee camps, where they have been unable to return home.
