The New Mon State Party (NMSP) spokesperson, Nai Aung Ma Nge told Than Lwin Times that seven points of agreement were signed during the peace talks with the coup junta, including the strengthening of the multi-party democracy system and the implementation of Mon affairs.
A delegation led by NMSP Vice Chairman Nai Aung Min visited Naypyidaw for three days from May 23 to 25, for peace talks invited by the coup leader.
NMSP spokesperson Nai Aung Ma Nge said that they signed seven points of agreement, including strengthening multi-party democracy and the establishment of a Federal Union through multi-party democracy, at the peace talks.
“Among the seven points, the main issue is to strengthen multi-party democracy and to build a union based on federalism and democracy. And the others are Mon issues such as peace and development in the Union,” NMSP spokesperson Nai Aung Ma Nge told Than Lwin Times.
Furthermore, an agreement was reached to establish a policy to include Mon language as a subject in primary schools in Mon-majority government schools as well as to communicate with the Mon State’s military council for the state’s development.
The NMSP says it is satisfied with the peace talks with the military council, but that their implementation remains to be seen.
” We are pleased with the initiatives. But it will take time to see if mutual understanding, mutual benefit, trust can be achieved, and to what extent they can support us,” said Nai Aung Ma Nge.
During the peace talks with the military council, the NMSP proposed that Mon National Day be declared an official holiday and that the Mon monks’ Ramanya Nikaya should be recognized as a legal Sangha organization.
However, there is disagreement among the Mon people over the NMSP’s participation in the peace talks invited by the military council.
The NMSP is an ethnic armed group that signed a Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) under the NLD government.
