Amnesty International reported that the death penalty in Myanmar has risen alarmingly during the military coup.
According to Amnesty International (AI), Myanmar had only one death punishment in 2020, and it has grown to an alarming number 90 since the military coup.
The death penalty has been imposed without a proper hearing of the cases and without regard for the appeal process.
“In the future, judges in charge of all court orders assigned by the junta, as well as those who act in compliance with the junta’s commands, will be held accountable. They cannot justify their actions by claiming they were acting on directions from higher-ups. Every individual involved must pay the price,” said a human right activist.
The detainees are being sentenced to death by the military council in Insein Central Prison and military tribunals.
In addition, on May 18, the military tribunal has sentenced seven youths : KO Ye Min Naing, Ko Soe Moe, Ko Thant Zin, Ko Dewa, Ko San Shei, A Thay Lay and Ma Aye Aye Min, to death under Section 54 of the Anti-Terrorism Law.
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, more than 10,000 individuals have been arrested, and about 1,000 have been imprisoned around the country since the military takeover (APP).
