In Myanmar, 209 people have been sentenced to death or life in prison from February coup last year to May 31 this year, the Institute for Strategy and Police (ISP)- Myanmar reported.
Of those 209 people, 117 were arrested and sentenced to death in connection with the anti-regime movement, six were sentenced to death and life imprisonment, and 86 were sentenced to life in prison.
Of the 209 people sentenced to death and life imprisonment, Yangon Region has the largest number with 202 people, and the other seven are from Ayeyarwaddy Region, according to ISP Myanmar.
Among those arrested and sentenced to death were two young males under the age of 18.
On June 3, the military council confirmed the death penalties of pro-democracy activists – Ko Jimmy, 88 student leader, and MP Phyo Zeyar Thaw- who were charged with terrorism.
This is the first execution of inmates since the military coup.
The French Embassy in Myanmar and the United Nations have opposed the death penalty by the junta and called for the release of all those arrested in connection with the coup.
In Myanmar, student leader Salai Tin Maung Oo was executed by hanging in 1976 under former
military dictator General Ne Win.
