During the 16 months from last year’s February coup to May this year, over 100 civilians were killed by landmines and explosive remnants of war across Myanmar, according to a statement released by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
As per the report on the study of landmines and unexploded ordnance by UNICEF, 244 explosions occurred during that 16-month period, killing 119 civilians and injuring 309 others.
The worst affected areas were Shan State, followed by Kachin and Rakhine States and Sagaing Region.
According to a report by UNICEF Myanmar, 86 civilians were killed and 180 others injured by landmines and explosive devices from February to December last year.
In addition, the blasts killed 33 civilians and injured 129 others during the five-month period from January to May this year.
According to UNICEF Myanmar, the death toll of civilians has increased significantly after the military coup due to the explosion of landmines and explosive remnants of war.
