Political prisoners held in Dawei, Hpa-an prisons tortured

The prison authorities continue to torture political prisoners held in Dawei and Hpa-an prisons for various reasons, the sources who assist political prisoners told Than Lwin Times.

On July 14, the prison authorities assaulted and tortured 10 political prisoners in Dawei Prison, Tanintharyi region, on the pretext of taking a shower late.

Those political prisoners are those imprisoned under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code.

In addition, nine students of Hpa-an University, who were transferred from Hpa-an Prison to Bago Region’s Tharyarwaddy Prison, were also beaten and tortured by the prison officials, according to the Hpa-an University Students’ Union.

 The prison authorities beat and tortured the university students, yelling, “Are you revolutionists?  Did your revolution succeed? “

The nine students of Hpa-an University who were unjustly arrested have been sentenced to 12 or 13 years in prison, and they were transferred to Tharyarwaddy prison on purpose, the Hpa-an University Students’ Union said.
