Mawlamyine, August (2)

The price of onions exported from different regions to Mon State has more than doubled in price to over 2,000 kyats per viss, the wholesale suppliers told Than Lwin Times.

Since late July, the price of onions has increased to more than 2,000 kyats per viss from only 900 kyats per viss in June.

Following last year’s coup, there were fewer onion growers, and the high cost of agricultural inputs and transportation pushed up the price of onions, said a dealer.

“In the past, when the price of domestic onions rose, we imported Chinese onions, but now the price of the Chinese currency, yuan, has also risen, so we no longer buy Chinese onions,” a wholesale trader said.

The cultivation of onions has drastically declined in the central region of Myanmar as a result of internal fighting, so the price may further increase in the upcoming months.

Mon State mainly imports and redistributes onions from Monywa, Seikphyu, Mahlaing, Meikhtila and Myingyan Towhships.
