Mortar strike kills two civilians, injures five in Kyaukgyi

Two civilians were killed and five others were wounded by junta forces’ mortar shell in Bawkahtar village of Kyaukgyi Township in KNU-held Nyaunglaybin District, according to a KNU statement.

As the junta forces fired artillery shells into Kyaukgyi’s Bawkahtar, Padekaw, and Mabi villages, a total of 4077 residents of 837 houses fled to seek refuge.

After junta armed forces had retreated from KNU’s Brigade 5 area to Brigade 3 area and conducted military operations, there were clashes with Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and Karen National Defense Force (KNDF) in Kyaukgyi since September 7.

Although the number of casualties on both sides has not been confirmed, the junta arimy raided the Karen ethnic people’s homes and food in the mountains, killing and eating their livestock animals, according to the KNU.

The military council’s raids and human rights violations forced 100,000 locals from 125 villages in KUN Brigade 3, Nyaunglaybin District, with 16 killed and 97 arbitrarily detained.
