Onion imports from all regions have declined dramatically in Mon State, and the price of onions continues to rise due to the low stock of onions in the market, wholesale dealers told Than Lwin Times.
In the first week of October, the price of onions was just around 3,000 kyats per viss; however, on October 20, the price increased to approximately 4,000 kyats per viss.
Onion prices are rising again because farmers and traders have low stocks of onions and cannot import as much as they need.
In June, the price of onions was around 900 kyats per viss; now, the price has nearly quadrupled to nearly 4000 kyats per viss.
Although the price of onions continued to rise, an onion farmer stated that the weather had damaged the onion fields, leaving no profit.
After the military coup, farmers are facing losses due to high prices of agricultural inputs, fuel and general expenses.
Furthermore, due to heavy fighting in onion-growing areas and travel difficulties, onion cultivation has been reduced by nearly half.
Mon State mainly imports and resells onions from Monywa, Seikphyu, Mahlaing, Myitthar, Meikhtila and Myingyan.
