Free Expression Myanmar calls on the international community to take action against the military council’s criminal offenses against journalists in international courts.
Free Expression Myanmar-FEM issued a statement on November 2, “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists”.
There can be no justification for threatening, killing, torturing, beating and sexually assaulting a journalist by junta, and the journalists lose their freedom without getting justice.
The report states that the internal justice system is in a state of collapse because it is no longer possible to investigate and punish the perpetrators in police stations and courts controlled by the Military Council in order to hold the Military Council responsible for the crime and bring justice to the people of Myanmar.
Therefore, Free Expression Myanmar (FEM) requests that international courts, international mechanisms and international officials use the provisions of international jurisdiction to take action against the military council.
Following the military coup, four journalists were unlawfully killed by the military council, bringing the total to nine if the amount before that period.
After the coup, the military council revoked the licenses the media business and publishing houses, and in addition to arresting journalists from all over the country, prosecuted them under criminal articles such as the State Anti-Terrorism Law, the Unlawful Association Law, and the Law on Weapons and Explosives.
Since the military takeover, fourteen media organizations have had their publication and media licenses revoked, and more than 100 journalists have been detained.
