Yangon, December (17)

The Karen National Union KNU said that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) approved by the US Congress is a new step for the Spring Revolution.

On December 16, the Senate approved the US government’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will provide technical assistance, rather than lethal components, to organizations involved in human rights and establishment of federal democracy.

The US House of Representatives adopted the bill on December 8, and the Senate reapproved it on December 12 with 83 votes in favor and 11 votes against.

After the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was approved by US Congress and if it would signed by President Joe Biden, the United States will provide aid to Myanmar in the 2023-2027 fiscal year.

The ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) and the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) in Myanmar will receive non-military technical support in accordance with the Burma Act under the NDAA.

Padoh Saw Taw Nee, spokesperson for the Karen National Union (KNU), stated that supporting the EAOs by name is a rare opportunity and a new step for the Spring Revolution, and that much technical assistance is required in the governance systems required for the establishment of a federal union for long-term benefits.

The NDAA also stipulated that US would provide assistance to the National Unity Government (NUG), the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and those who joined the Civil Disobedient Movement (CDM).

In addition, the law provides for assistance to deserters who oppose the military coup and encourage the restoration of civilian rule.

A responsible official for Myaing PDF, Magwe Township, said that the revolution would be more successful if they received financial support and technical support, even if they did not receive weapons support.

Political analysts point out that the law states that non-lethal components will be provided, so air defense system technologies can be obtained for the revolution.

Duwah Lashi La, acting president of the National Unity Government (NUG), expressed gratitude for the approval of NDAA, which includes the Burma Act.

The Burma Act will be able to meet the needs and expectations of the people who are struggling in Myanmar, according to the interim president’s message.

The Burma Act states that Russia and China, which have been providing support and protection to the military council since the coup, must be held accountable.

In addition, the Burma Act calls for sanctions against the military council and its associates, and businesses controlled by the military regime that commit human rights violations, and to take action against the Myanmar Oil and Natural Gas Enterprise (MOGE), which is the main source of income for the military council.
