Yangon, December (24)

The informal talks on Myanmar issues led by the Thai government will not yield any results that will address Myanmar’s issues, the spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office of NUG told Than Lwin Times.

On December 22, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of neighboring Thailand invited the ASEAN member countries to an informal meeting in Thailand to discuss the Myanmar crisis.

The meeting was attended by representatives from ASEAN member countries such as Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as delegations led by the regime’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wunna Maung Lwin.

U Nay Phone Latt, the spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office of the National Unity Government (NUG), said that this meeting is illegal, does not represent all ASEAN countries, and will not solve the Myanmar issue.

The military council, which was not allowed to attend the ASEAN Summit with ASEAN leaders because it failed to implement the five-point consensus adopted by the ASEAN summit last year, has only a chance to participate in this informal discussion.

But the important member countries of ASEAN, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, did not attend this informal meeting.

Political analyst U Than Soe Naing argues that this meeting was held by Thailand to acquire international legitimacy for the military council and that no decisions can be made from it.

The regime’s delegation reportedly presented its activities for ASEAN’s five-point consensus, peace talks with Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) with unilateral ceasefire announcement, and preparation for general election, said in its statement on December 22.

The junta army continues to commit acts of violence, such as burning down civilian homes, arresting and killing people, shooting with heavy weapons for no reason, and bombing with airplanes.

On December 21, the United Nations Security Council approved the draft resolution on Myanmar issues submitted by the Britain.

The resolution included an immediate end to the violence, the unconditional release of all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and the implementation of the five-point consensus adopted by ASEAN.
