Thai-Myanmar border trade nearly halts amid intense fighting

Kawkayeik, December (27)

Thai-Myanmar border trade has nearly come to a halt because of the clashes happening on the Asian Highway and in Karen State’s Kawkayeik Township, the traders said.

There have been clashes between junta troops and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) since December 16.

Some parts of the road were damaged as a result of aerial bombardment, the use of multiple rocket launchers, and the planting of mines.

According to one trader, the trucks are currently prohibited from traveling along Asian Highway, which stops the flow of commodities.

Due to fighting between the two sides, the cargo trucks carrying fruits and vegetables are stuck along the Asian Highway, resulting in damage to the food, and certain products that were sold at discounts in Kyondoe and Kawkayeik Townships.

The Myawaddy-Kawkayeik Asian route is currently blocked by hundreds of trucks, while some motorbikes and family cars are passing through the Htoekawkoe road.

According to border traders, if fighting between the two sides lasts for a long time, the flow of goods will be all but stopped, and prices may once again increase.

Myanmar primarily imports food, textiles, cosmetics, machinery, and construction materials from Thailand through the Myawaddy Trade Zone, while primarily exporting corn, broken rice, and aquatic products to Thailand.
