Student activist from Mawlamyine University sentenced to 13 years in prison

Mawlamyine, December (29)

A final-year physics student from Mawlamyine University was sentenced to 13 years in prison by military council on December 27, the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union said in its statement.

Ko Myo Thuya Aung was arrested at his home on June 30, and he was sentenced to a long prison term by the Special Court of Hpa-an Prison more than 5 months later.

Ko Myo Thura Aung was detained by the military council, charged with two counts, and now faces a lengthy prison term for just one of them.

The military council acts like dictators by arbitrarily detaining people and students and sentencing them to lengthy prison terms, the leader of Mawlamyine University Students’ Union, Min Thanzin Oo told Than Lwin Times.

Ko Myo Thu Aung, who was sentenced to a long prison term, is a member of the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union’s fourth central working group and a former officer in charge of archives and research.

According to a survey by the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union Research Committee, 78 male and female students from Mawlamyine University were detained following the military coup, and there may be more who are not yet listed.
