Around 40,000 people leave Myanmar every month as a result of armed conflicts, economic and general crises following the military coups, according to the report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released on December 28.
According to the IOM, approximately 40,000 people have left the country every month since last October for a variety of reasons, including insecurity, economic decline, and loss of livelihoods, with the majority of them going to Thailand.
In addition, many Myanmar nationals are attempting to leave the country in a number of ways, putting them at risk of being victims of human trafficking and exploitation, as well as people from refugee camps being lured to work abroad, the IOM said.
In 2023, there will be an increase in the number of people leaving the country, in part because of the loss of workers’ rights, underpayment of wages, said Daw Ei Ei Phyu, the spokesperson of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM).
According to surveys conducted by the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM), most of the factories in Hlaing Tharyar, Shwe Pyi Thar, and Mingalandon Industrial Zones have requested permission to close the factory and the relevant labor offices in 2023.
However, because the majority of Myanmar migrant workers are undocumented, they face labor rights violations and wage exploitation abroad, and Burmese embassies under the military council are unable to effectively assist them.
According to IOM, more Myanmar citizens may leave the country in 2023 as a result of the general crisis.
Furthermore, more than 1.4 million people have fled their homes due to armed conflicts in the country, and the number of refugees is expected to rise further in 2023, requiring more humanitarian assistance, according to the IOM.
