EV charging stations to be set up in major cities, says junta chief

Mawlamyine, 8 February

Coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing reiterated that more charging stations for electric vehicles will be constructed in some major cities, including Nay Pyi Taw, despite no regular electricity supply since the military takeover in the past two years.

At a meeting with businesspersons, traders and industrialists in Yangon region on 5 February,  Min Aung Hlaing offered tax reduction on imports of EV that can save fuel consumption in public transportation sector if sufficient power could be generated.

The junta chief said construction of charging stations are underway and the project will be expanded to main roads and major cities.

However, veteran experts in automobile industry said that his dream is very ridiculous and not realistic for Myanmar, while the country has no regular power supply even for the households.

Under this plan, ground surveys are being conducted for construction of charging stations along the highway to Nay Pyi Taw since December 2021.
