Four people stepped on landmines in Mon State’s Ye Township in three weeks, from January 28 to February 18, the residents and rescue workers told Than Lwin Times.
They were struck by landmines and seriously injured when they passed by the junta outpost stationed near Kyotadar Creek in Baekalwe village, Lamaing Town, in Ye.
U Nyunt Wei, 59, and Nai Ko Mai, 70, both from Lamaing , lost their left legs, and the other two sustained shrapnel wounds to their legs.
Due to frequent attacks on their camp by PDFs, the junta army planted explosives all around it. Besides, they frequently shot passersby in the orchards even before the curfew was imposed, a local said.
The landmines often explode in the orchards of regime camps, the locals do not dare go to the orchards, and some of them are stepping on landmines while going to work to provide for their families, even though they are worried about the danger of landmines.
Than Lwin Times’ data reveals that at least 10 civilians were wounded by landmines in the Kyaikto, Belin, and Ye Townships of Mon State since the military coup.
At least 50 children have been killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance since February 2021, when the military took power in a coup, according to a report released in June last year by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
