Number of IDPs increases by more than 25,000 due to Tanintharyi battle

Tanintharyi, February (21)

The number of displaced people increased by more than 25,000 due to the ongoing conflict in Palaw, Tanintharyi, and Dawei townships of Tanintharyi Region, according to the People’s Defense Forces.

After the military council declared martial law in Palaw and Tanintharyi townships on February 2, the regime forces marched in full force to Dawei and those two townships.

After that, at least 20 battles broke out in Palaw, Tanintharyi and Dawei townships, and more than 25,000 local people fled to nearby forest to seek refuge.

As of February 20, more than 20,000 people had fled the conflict in Palaw, nearly 5,000 in Tanintharyi, and a few hundred in Dawei.

As the number of refugees increases, accommodation, shelter, blankets, mosquito nets, and food aid are needed, said the information officer of Myeik District Battalion 1.

The military council prohibited the transportation of food and medicine during the conflict between the two factions and blocked the highways, making it difficult for the displaced people to access aid.

Myeik District Battalion 1 reported on February 6 that there are more than 7,000 refugees who have escaped the fighting in Tanintharyi Region in the two years since the military coup.
