Yangon, April (30)

Retno Marsudi, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister and ASEAN’s special envoy, stated that efforts are underway to bring about dialogue that will involve every stakeholder and settle disagreements on Myanmar issue.

ASEAN chair Indonesia said it had been engaging with the military council, the National Unity Government (NUG), ethnic armed organizations, and political parties.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi revealed that talks are underway at a preliminary meeting held at the Indonesian Presidential Palace on April 27 for the upcoming ASEAN Summit.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has not officially announced the talks with Indonesia, the ASEAN rotating chair, and Than Lwin Times has tried to reach the spokesperson of the NUG Prime Minister’s Office for comment, but he went unanswered.

U Aung San Myint, secretary-2 of KNPP told the Than Lwin Times that the KNPP, which is fighting with the military council in the Spring Revolution, has emphasized the issue of providing humanitarian aid in discussions with ASEAN countries.

He said, “We do not talk about politics with other international organizations. We still need a lot of preconditions and reforms for political dialogue. I would like to say that this is not the right time for this. When discussing with ASEAN countries and international embassies, they mainly discuss ways to provide humanitarian aid and deliver aid directly to internally displaced people.U Than Soe Naing, a political analyst, remarked that ASEAN and the United Nations cannot be expected to resolve Myanmar’s political crisis in a situation where the member countries have not yet reached a common position. In other words, Myanmar issue remains unresolved on the international stage. If there is a dialogue between China and the United States, I believe that this will be an impetus for the parties in Myanmar to come to the table.”

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that it is not easy to resolve the Myanmar issue, but as ASEAN Chairman, they are trying their best to hold talks with both sides.

She added that they will discuss the implementation of the ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar issue at the ASEAN summit to be held in the second week of May.

However, the ASEAN leaders’ decisions to resolve the Myanmar crisis, such as the immediate cessation of violence, consultation among relevant groups, and provision of humanitarian assistance, have not been effectively implemented even after two years.
