Yangon, May (11)

ASEAN leaders have issued a statement condemning the attack on an aid convoy of their representatives in Sisai Township, southern Shan State, and saying that the perpetrators must be held accountable.

The announcement was made at the 42nd ASEAN Summit being held in Indonesia on May 10.

The statement also said that they were deeply concerned with ongoing violence in Myanmar and urged the immediate cessation of all forms of violence and the use of force to create a conducive environment for the safe and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance and inclusive national dialogues.

Moreover, ASEAN leaders said that they supported the efforts of Indonesia, Chair of ASEAN, including its continued engagements with all stakeholders in Myanmar, to encourage progress in the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

According to reports, Myanmar’s seat at the current ASEAN summit is empty, and the leaders will discuss Myanmar issues.

The National Unity Government (NUG) announced on May 9 that the attack on the aid convoy took place in an area controlled by the military council, and although the situation is currently complicated, it is under investigation.
