Yangon, May (12)

The Global Disaster Warning and Cooperation System (GDACS) reported on May 11 that nearly 2 million people in Myanmar could be affected by powerful cyclone Mocha.

The GDACS stated that cyclone Mocha could pass on May 14 between Kyaukphyu in the northern coastal region of Rakhine State and Cox’s Bazar in the southeast of Bangladesh.

It is estimated that the powerful cyclone Mocha could affect more than 900,000 people in Rakhine State and more than 1 million people in the entire country.

Mocha, a red level tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of over 167 kilometers per hour, is expected to hit Myanmar the most and may require humanitarian assistance.

The military council’s Meteorological Department said cyclone Mocha could pack maximum winds of 90 to over 100 miles per hour as it crosses Myanmar.

When cyclone Mocha made landfall, the wave height in Rakhine state’s Sittwe and Maungdaw districts might reach 10 to 14 feet, while in Kyaukphyu district’s estuary and tributaries, it could reach 7 to 10 feet.

As the storm approaches, it has been announced that heavy rain and thunderstorms may occur in various regions across the country from May 11 to 15.
