CDM school teacher killed despite military council’s call for PDFs and organizations to surrender

Real vs. Fake News

Mingalabar! Welcome to Than Lwin Times’ Real vs. Fake News program.

This program verifies fake news and misinformation about revolutionary events spread on social media after the military takeover.

Today, we will be checking the content of the photo titled, “The military council is calling for organizations, including the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), to surrender and is offering rewards to those who surrender along with weapons and members of PDFs are happily reunited with their families.

This content has been disseminated via the Telegram fake accounts of Saw Ba Maung and Han Nyein Oo since May 29.

Military lobbyists have been spreading rumors online with photos saying, “The military council is urging various organizations, including the PDFs, to surrender for participating in the state’s future processes, and the military regime is actually offering cash rewards to those who surrender along with their arms as promised, and the PDF members are reuniting with their families happily”.

The Than Lwin Times looked into the post and found it to be misinformation.

In fact, U Thaung Yi, a 70-year-old retired school teacher from Yonepin village, Taungtha Township, Mandalay Region, who believed the military council’s offer and made a pledge to follow orders, was killed at the interrogation center, and his body was forcibly disappeared, according to the local residents and reliable media outlets.

U Thaung Yi, a retired school teacher from Taungtha who believed the reports in the junta-controlled media, turned himself in to the police station, and was interrogated by the army and the police, who killed U Thaung Yi and buried him.

According to the reliable sources mentioned above, the report, “The military council is calling for organizations including the PDFs to surrender and is offering cash rewards to those who surrender along with weapons, and they are happily reunited with their families,” is just false information spread by junta supporters.
