Businessmen who contributed to the construction of the Maravijaya Buddha image in Nay Pyi Taw, which was built by the military council led by General Min Aung Hlaing, who is oppressing the people in many ways, are supporters of the bad people, said Venerable Min ThuNya from Buddhist University.
On June 29, the military leader invited top local businessmen and explained what would be the highest carved sitting Buddha image in the world. A total of 101 businessmen who attended the ceremony donated more than 16 billion Kyats, reported in the junta-controlled newspaper.
The military leader is attempting to cover up his acts by constructing a Buddha image in the name of religion, and those who paid billions of kyats are the historical perpetrators, according to Sayardaw.
CB Bank Chairman U Khin Maung Aye donated 2,200 million Kyats to the construction of the Buddha image; owner of Wei Mar Company Limited, U Kyay contributed 2,000 million kyats; and Chairman of Eden Group, U Wunna Khaing donated 15,000 million Kyats.
Furthermore, U Thein Zaw Win, the owner of ATOM Communications Company, donated more than 560 million kyats, U Tun Myint Naing, chairman of Asia World Company, contributed to 500 million kyats, and U Maung Weik, who was released from prison following the coup, donated 100 million kyats.
General Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, has been crowning pagodas and bestowing titles on monks while building a replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Russia with Sitagu Sayardaw.
Vulnerable Min Thunya went on to say that the construction of the Buddha image by the military leader, who is carrying out brutal actions such as arresting and killing the people, and burning houses against the teachings of the Buddha, is just a show, and the donations also support the military group to stay in power.
The stake-driving ceremony for the Maravijaya Buddha picture was held in the Nay Pyi Taw council area of Dekkhina Township in mid-2020, and construction operations were stepped up after the coup. Analysts said this could be one of the military leader’s pre-coup plans.
Since the coup in Myanmar, the military regime has killed more than 3,700 people and destroyed more than 70,000 houses and buildings, according to reports by independent organizations.
