President U Win Myint and state counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi underwent an examination at the Supreme Court in connection with the alleged five counts of corruption related to the rental and purchase of a helicopter, sources close to the court told Than Lwin Times.
At the trial on July 12, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers pleaded for her acquittal because the accusations were unreasonable, but the military council argued that she should not be released.
The lawyers’ group requested a meeting with the President and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to discuss appeals and special appeals with them, but sources close to them said that the military council has not yet accepted it.
She was sentenced to seven years in prison for corruption in the purchase, rental, and maintenance of a helicopter to carry out rescue operations during the NLD government.
President U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi pleaded not guilty to the allegations during their trial in Nay Pyi Taw Prison.
In addition, Vice President U Henry Van Thieu testified in court that the President and the State Counselor acted according to the rules and regulations regarding this case, said a source close to the court.
The appeals and special appeals in the cases in which the two top leaders of the country were accused and imprisoned by the military council are scheduled to be heard again on July 18.
