Flooding has killed three children and left three others missing in Mon State, affecting thousands of residents, according to the rescue team and locals.
Since the morning of July 18, heavy rains have caused flooding, flooded roads, and landslides in Mon State’s Ye, Mudon, Thanbyuzayet, Chaungson, Mawlamyain, and Paung townships.
A one-and-a-half-year-old child from Thiri Mingalar Ward, two children from Thiri Myaing Ward were killed, and two others are missing as a result of the flood.
Over 600 flood victims in Mawlamyine have been urgently relocated to monasteries and other religious buildings.
A spokesperson of the Mawlamyine social rescue team said, “Flood occurs in Thiri Mingalar, Thiri Myaing, southern of the city, Zaykyo, Zeyar Myaing. One person was injured when a brick wall collapsed at Nyaung Pin Seik and a child drowned in Thiri Myaing”.
A man and a woman were injured when the wall of a building collapsed in the Nyaung Pin Pay neighborhood after incessant rain. A house was destroyed in a landslide in Nyaung Lam village, Chaungson Township, and people from seven other houses were evacuated.
More than 200 locals from low-lying neighborhoods have been relocated to a monastery as a result of flooding in Mudon Township. Similarly, more than 500 flood victims have taken refuge in monasteries and mountains in Thanphyuzara and Ye districts.
However, the flood-affected people are moving on their own without receiving any assistance from the military council.
On the afternoon of July 18, a guy was swept away in the stream in Oaktadar village and is missing, said locals.
Every year, Mon State is plagued by floods and natural disasters, and in 2019, floods and landslides killed around 70 locals.
