Two children injured by artillery strike in Kyondoe

Kyondoe, July (22)

Two children were injured in an artillery strike fired by the junta army in Shwe Wah Chaung village, Kyaukai village tract of Kyondoe Township, under the territory of KNU’s Dooplaya District, according to the report released by KNU on July 21.

On the morning of July 20, Khahnakhwe Mountain-based Artillery 313 in Mudong Township fired 120-mm mortar rounds into Shwe Wah Chaung village when there was no fighting.

As a result of the military council’s artillery shelling, 8-year-old Maung Tun Tun from Shwe Wah Chaung village was injured by shrapnel in the left temple, and six-year-old Maung Zarni Lin was seriously injured in the head; both were rushed to the hospital, said the statement.

The KNU said that the junta troops are deliberately firing heavy weapons into the villages where civilians live when there is no fighting, so the locals are living in fear every day.

The junta shelling injured nine civilians, including two 10-year-old children, and killed two others in KNU Brigade 6, Dooplaya District in June.

In June, there were 29 clashes between the junta army and the combined force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) /Karen National Defense Force (KNDO), according to the KNU’s statement.
