Fighting has been raging on between the junta army and the combined force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) near Chaung Sauk and Mayangon villages in Mon State’s Thaton Township since July 29, the spokesperson of KNU-Thaton confirmed to Than Lwin Times.
A clash broke out as nearly 100 junta troops, including the Thaton-based Light Infantry Battalion 9, left from Mayangon, Chaung Sauk, and Win Pa villages, splitting into three columns.
Although the initial battle took place, the specific situation on the ground was not yet known, according to KNU’s Thaton District Spokesperson, Pado Saw Aye Naing, but the conflict could get more intense if the military council moves again.
Some local residents have fled their homes, and most villagers are monitoring the situation, according to local residents.
Last July 27, after KNLA joint forces attacked a junta camp based in Wi Yaw village, Thaton Township, and the regime forces fired back with heavy weapons into the villages, killing one resident of Htone Bo Lay village and injuring six others.
The junta artillery shelling destroyed 13 houses, two monasteries, one clinic, two vehicles in Wi Yaw village, and killed some cows, according to KNU-Thaton District’s statement.
