A prison staff slapped a political prisoner on the face, sparking a prison riot at Dawei Prison in Tanintharyi Region, said sources close to the matter.
The riot broke out when prison staff slapped an inmate who asked for more food during breakfast around 7:00 a.m. on November 7.
The riot erupted as a result of the prison authorities’ failure to solve the issue, and shouts and demands could be heard outside the prison, said the source.
The nearly 30-minute-long prison riot has been calmed down, and five political prisoners have been confined for their alleged involvement in the riot.
The Than Lwin Times reached out to Dawei Prison authorities for comment on the prison unrest but received no response.
During the coup, regime troops beat and tortured the incarcerated political prisoners in Dawei prison.

Following the coup, more than 25,000 people arrested nationwide, of which more than 19,000 are still in custody, according to the report released on 3 November by the Assistance Association for the Political Prisoners (AAPP).
