Deputy battalion commander shot dead in Phayar Thone Su Town

A deputy battalion commander was shot and killed by a sniper in the Thai-Myanmar border town of Phaar Thone Su in Karen State around 9:00 a.m. on November 23, said locals.

Major Aye Chan from Kawkayeik-based Infantry Battalion 97’s deputy battalion commander was shot by a sniper as he was about to leave after getting a haircut at a beauty parlor in Phayar Thone Su.

Major Thanh died on the spot after being shot in the head by a sniper.

Residents said Major Aye Chan was taken to the Phayar Thone Su Hospital by social rescue team.

Although the deputy battalion commander was assassinated, the military council did not conduct a search and inspection in the town, but the soldiers were living in the military compound, residents said.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

In addition to the junta army, Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), KNU/KNLA Peace Council, Border Guard Force (BGF), Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA), and Mon ethnic armed organizations, including the New Mon State Party(NMSP), are active in Phayar Thone Su Town.

According to military sources, the Infantry Battalion 97, based in Kawkayeik, is also the unit stationed in Three Temples for regional security.
