According to the ISP-Myanmar (Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar), the majority of those killed in the year following the military coup were young people.
Between February 1 last year and April 6 this year, more than 2,300 civilians were killed across the country, including more than 550 youths.
The majority of those killed were between the ages of 18 and 30, accounting for more than 32% of all deaths.
Young people are resisting because they do not want to be oppressed by the junta and they have given their lives for the revolution.
“Young people are the first to rebel if there is any repression, whether by a democratic government or a dictatorship, rather than a coup. Young people have the right to think freely, to support and oppose causes they believe in. These young people are the front line of the revolution. And most of all, these young people are the ones who pay the price for their lives and their families,” he said.
According to ISP-Myanmar, civilians were killed during the protests by gunmen from the military council, arrested and interrogated at the interrogation camps, and killed during the armed conflict.
In addition, civilian deaths in Sagaing, Yangon and Mandalay have the highest share at 64%.
ISP-Myanmar cites records from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) as well as information on civilian casualties gathered during the coup.
