Brazil has restricted Myanmar seafarers who are holding seaman book, since 1 May.
The announcement of Myanmar Seafarers’ Employment Services Federation (MSESF) said that the restriction was made as per the newly amended Brazilian immigration law.
Although Brazil has no longer recognized seaman book as an official document, Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID) holders will be allowed for entry. Those who do not have the certificate may apply for entry visa at the Brazil Embassy in Yangon.
The MSESF also warned that Myanmar sailors and officials such as contractors, owners, and ship owners who arrived in Brazil by ship may face fines and deportation.
And that after seamen’s employment contract is expired, and if they prefer working as seafarers under the international maritime law, they need to remain on the ship.
The Myanmar embassy in Brazil has notified that if Myanmar seafarers need to enter Brazil by ship, they need coordination with Brazilian authorities.
Myanmar seafarers said the Myanmar embassy has not facilitated in the process, and the restriction of Brazil was the repercussion of junta coup.
