More than 20,000 IDPs in KNU’s Thaton district

Belin, May (6)

According to KNU officials, the military council’s airstrikes and artillery shelling in KNU Brigade 1’s Thaton District have displaced more than 20,000 people.

They live in neighbouring forests, caverns, and villages in the KNU Brigade 1-controlled Belin, Thaton, and Hpa-an Townships.

“We are doing our best to assist the displaced people,” KNU Brigade 1 Thaton District Chairman Pado Saw Soe Myint told Than Lwin Times, “but as the number of refugees grows, so does the demand.”

Most IDPs are currently living in the woods, suffering from diarrhoea and sickness and in need of medical assistance, food, and clean drinking water.

The Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) Battalion 2 sent a warning letter to the military council’s Lay Kay and Wintar Pan military outposts in Belin Township on April 23, after which regime planes dropped bombs and fired artillery shells into the settlements.

In the KNU Brigade 1-controlled Belin, Thaton, and Hpa-an Townships, military tensions between the junta toops and the KNLA have risen.
