The New Mon State Party (NMSP), an ethnic armed organization, and the military regime’s National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) held another meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on February 13 to amend the 2008 Constitution, the military council reported.
In this discussion, they discussed the two sides’ proposals to amend the basic articles of the 2008 Constitution in order to build a union based on democracy and federalism.
The military council announced that a second meeting will be held on February 14 regarding the 2008 constitutional amendment.
This discussion was attended by a delegation led by the Chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC)’s Peace Talks Team Leader Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, and a delegation led by NMSP Vice-Chairman Nai Aung Min.
The New Mon State Party (NMSP) discussed the list of Union legislation (Table 1) and (Table 2) in the 2008 Constitution, as well as Parts I, II, and III of the Union Accord with Peace Talks Team on the 9th and 10th of November.
The 10 Mon organizations involved in Mon politics requested the New Mon State Party (NMSP) not to discuss with the military council again, but NMSP continued to discuss with the military council for the fourth time.
On September 16 of last year, 10 Mon organizations involved in Mon politics sent an open letter to the New Mon State Party (NMSP) not to hold political talks with the military council again, stating that the peace talks being conducted by the regime are fake and an effort to gain legitimacy and find a political exit.
Than Lwin Times contacted New Mon State Party (NMSP) officials several times regarding the issue of the amendment to the 2008 Constitution, but they did not respond.
The New Mon State Party (NMSP) signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) along with the Lahu Democratic Union (LDU) on February 13, 2018 under the NLD administration.
