The New Mon State Party (NMSP), one of the ethnic armed organizations that signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), has been holding peace talks with the military council’s peace talk team in Nay Pyi Taw since July 5, according to the military regime.
The peace talks were attended by representatives of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) of the Military Council, the vice-chairman of the NMSP, Nai Aung Min, and members of the Central Executive Committee, Nai Banyar Lei and Nai Aung Mangae.
The military council reported that both sides mutually discussed the implementation of the previously agreed points and the attitudes of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) Central Committee.
The second day of talks will continue on July 6, and the New Mon State Party has not yet announced anything about the talks.
Than Lwin Times tried to reach Nai Mangae, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the New Mon State Party, by phone regarding the peace talks, but no response was received until the time of reporting.
Following the military coup in late April 2021, ten ethnic armed organizations attended the peace talks convened by military leader General Min Aung Hlaing at least five times.
Among them, the New Mon State Party has met with the military council six times, which is more than any other ethnic armed organization.
Despite the Mon people’s criticism and objections to the dialogue with the military regime, the Central Executive Committee declared on February 5 that the NMSP will remain steadfastly committed to armed resistance and resolve political issues through dialogue with successive governments.
