Fighting escalates in eastern Demoso

Demoso, May (17)

The Karenni resistance forces have been engaging in battles with junta forces that invaded eastern Demoso of Kayah State, the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) told Than Lwin Times.

Since May 13, a 200-strong military column has invaded the eastern side of Demoso Township and clashed with the allied revolutionary forces.

Among the regime columns were Battalions 427, 54, 102, 360, and Divisions 66, 55, 99, 22 and some battalions under the Military Operations Commands (MOC), with the junta conducting airstrikes, said Khu Ye Du, the strategic commander of KNDF.

Currently, fierce fighting has been raging on, and the death toll is yet to be known.

In April, the junta troops failed to set up a camp in Dawma Ta Gyi village tract in the eastern part of Demoso township and had to retreat after a clash with the allied resistance forces.

The military council announced on February 2 that it would impose martial law in Demoso, Hpruso, Shartaw, and Bawlakhe townships, where the fighting intensifies.

In Kayah State, more than 200,000 people have fled their homes due to the fighting between the two factions, which is 75 percent of the state’s population.
