The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste’s recognition of the National Unity Government (NUG) as the representative government of Myanmar is a sign of diplomatic failure for the military council, said the activists.
The President of East Timor officially invited the National Unity Government (NUG) to represent Myanmar for the swearing-in ceremony of the 9th new government of The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste held on July 1.
The Foreign Minister of the National Unity Government (NUG) Daw Zin Mar Aung and NUG’s representative to the Czech Republic, U Lin Thant attended the swearing-in ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.
“Inviting the National Unity Government (NUG) to the swearing-in ceremony of the president, excluding the military council that seized the country’s power by force for almost two and a half years, is a triumph of international affairs. It is the responsibility of NUG’s representatives living in the respective countries and Myanmar people to make NUG more recognized internationally like East Timor,” said Ma Honey Tun, a Burmese citizen in Japan who took part in the Spring Revolution.
The government of the Czech Republic was the first to recognize the National Unity Government (NUG), formed by representatives of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and ethnic leaders, after the military coup.
East Timor, which is trying to become an ASEAN member country, became the second country to recognize NUG as the representative government of Myanmar.
U Than Soe Naing, a political analyst, expressed his opinion that “East Timor’s recognition of the NUG as the government, which is struggling for federal democracy, without recognizing the military council, is an extraordinary victory in diplomacy”.
NUG’s Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung, who attended the swearing-in ceremony, presented East Timor’s President Jose Ramos Horta with a portrait of public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the president reported on his Facebook page.
East Timor is a sovereign state that declared independence from Indonesia in 2002 and applied to join ASEAN in 2011.
ASEAN has agreed in principle to accept East Timor as a member at the summit, and East Timor, with a population of just over 1.3 million, is set to become the 11th member of ASEAN.
