The National Unity Government (NUG) will continue to engage in diplomatic and political cooperation with the East Timor, U Kyaw Zaw, spokesman for NUG’s presidential office, told Than Lwin Times.
The NUG reported on July 10 that a delegation led by the NUG’s Minister of Foreign Affairs visited East Timor from July 1 to 5 and successfully discussed continued cooperation and political agreements between the two countries.
However, no details were released as to what and which sectors were agreed upon.
U Kyaw Zaw said that the two countries will continue diplomatic cooperation, and this is beneficial political support for the success of the people’s spring revolution.
The National Unity Government (NUG) was officially invited by the Republic of East Timor to represent Myanmar at the swearing-in ceremony of the 9th new government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste held on July 1.
Daw Zin Mar Aung, Foreign Minister of the National Unity Government (NUG), and U Lin Thant, NUG’s representative to the Czech Republic, attended the swearing-in ceremony and a meeting at the Presidential Palace.
In early July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the military council objected to the East Timor government’s official invitation to meet with the NUG government as Myanmar’s representative.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Yangon was summoned by the military council to Nay Pyi Taw on July 5 and warned to refrain from doing so in the future.
Following the military coup, the government of the Czech Republic was the first to recognize the National Unity Government (NUG), formed by representatives of the NLD and ethnic leaders.
Following that, East Timor, which is attempting to join ASEAN, became the second country to recognize the National Unity Government (NUG) as representing Myanmar.
