Military regime attempts to exploit public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for political purpose

Nay Pyi Taw, July (18)

The military council has taken steps to use public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been imprisoned for more than two years since the military coup, said political analysts.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai revealed that he had the opportunity to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison, on July 9 in Nay Pyi Taw.

The junta spokesman, General Zaw Min Tun, confirmed the meeting between the two leaders on July 13 but stated that he did not know the details of the conversation.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was in good health and that she supported dialogue to help resolve the crisis in Myanmar, Don told reporters after the ASEAN meeting on July 12, but did not give details.

“The military council allowing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with the Thai Foreign Minister is just a matter of exploitation,” said U Pe Than, a veteran politician, “They don’t have the courage to allow Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to move freely for politics”.

The military council’s way of allowing foreign diplomats and special representatives from international organizations to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her prison terms is an old strategy adopted by successive military regimes.

The ISP-Myanmar, a research group, reported that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed to meet with international envoys at least 12 times between 1989 and 2023 when she was under house arrest or in prison, but these meetings did not lead to a turning point in Myanmar’s political crisis.

U Kyaw Zaw, the spokesperson for the Presidential Office of the National Unity Government (NUG), told Than Lwin Times that the military council may try to gain political advantage by releasing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, holding sham talks with NCA-signatory groups, but she will not do anything that goes against the will of the people.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has vowed to adhere steadfastly to the revolutionary objectives, future federal goals, and norms established in accordance with the will of the people, and to work relentlessly until victory is achieved.

On the other hand, the Indonesian Foreign Minister urged that it is time to implement the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus that has been established for more than two years and hold a dialogue involving all stakeholders to find a solution to the Myanmar issue.

A resistance fighter of the 27th Battalion of Yinmarbin District, Sagaing Region, said, “The military council can release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a political escape when the situation is in crisis, but this is not the answer to the Spring Revolution. We will continue to fight by taking arms. I see the move of the military council as a trap to cause discord among the resistance forces. Min Aung Hlaing, the terrorist, will hear the people’s chants during the spring revolution”.

Because the state of emergency is set to expire on July 31, political observers predict the military council may choose a softer approach and extend the state of emergency.

The military leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, hinted at the extension of the state of emergency, saying that there are still things that need to be focused on for the security and stability of the country.

The ISP-Myanmar, a research group, reported on June 30 that more than 9,500 clashes have erupted throughout the country since the coup.
