Nearly 30 locals, including students of Technological University, were arrested after the junta troops were caught in an ambush attack near Maung Me Shaung village in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei Township, according to the resistance forces.
The combined resistance forces attacked a dump truck carrying nearly 20 junta forces on their way to Dawei from Yebyu Township around 4 p.m. on 3 August.
The attack took the lives of five junta soldiers while one comrade of the resistance forces sustained injuries, a spokesperson of Dawei Guerilla Revolutionary Force (DGRF) told Than Lwin Times.
With around 40 reinforcement troops, the junta column invaded Maung Me Shaung village and arrested about 30 villagers as human shields.
The army took the villagers to their camp and freed many of them in the evening, but the four Dawei Technological University students remained in custody.
Nearly 10 houses were destroyed in the raid of regime troops in Maung Me Shaung village, said the locals.
The regime forces are frequently attacked at Maung Me Shaugn, near Dawei Technological University, and local residents are detained and used as human shields.
According to local research organizations, more than 100 local residents were arrested in Tanintharyi in July, and the majority of them had their cases brought by the junta under various sections.
