Military regime’s artillery shelling in recent days killed four civilians and injured 16 others in KNU’s Nyaunglaybin District, according to the reports of Karen civil society organizations.
After relinquishing some military outposts in KNU Brigade 3 of Nyaunglaybin District, the junta army has been carrying out more targeted attacks on local residents.
From 1 to 4 September, four civilians, including a 12-year-old child and an 83-year-old woman, were killed and 16 children, women, and local people were injured in Mone and Kyaukkyi Townships due to artillery fire by the regime forces.
The junta army launched more artillery shells after Thit Cha Seik military base was captured in Mone Township, according to Karen civil society organizations.
“The military council has lost many of its bases in Nyaunlaybin District due to attacks by KNU and allied resistance forces. That is why the junta army is fighting back using heavy weapons and aircraft. The fighter jets drop bombs on the villages almost every day, and we see many people being injured or killed,” said Saw Lay Kapaw, a spokesperson for the Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN).
Having lost the camps and troops, the junta army continues to commit human rights violations by firing heavy weapons into villages and farms, bombing by airplane, and conducting drone attacks on a daily basis, targeting civilians.
Meanwhile, a military aircraft bombed Law Mu Thar village and Pagoda Hill monastery in KNU’s Kyaukkyi Township around 9 a.m. on 5 September, destroying a monastery and a house and forcing over 700 local residents to flee.
The junta attack caused more than 200,000 local people from KNU’s Nyaunglaybin District to flee, and the displaced people are in need of humanitarian aid, according to a statement released by the Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN).
