A landmine attack on Kyoneate bridge on Yangon-Mawlamyine highway near Shweyaungpya village between Thahton and Belin townships , Mon state, left 3 dead and 26 injured including junta officials on 29 June.
One of the lanes of the bridge collapsed after the landmine attack around 4:30 am, killing one legal officer.
A assistant director of Department of Bridge and a staff member of General Administration Department in Thahton district were killed in drone attacks with 10 bombs as they were inspecting the damage of bridge.
Moreover, 26 officials including military’s commanding officer Colonel Aung Aung Hein, members of military and police and civil service staff were injured in drone attack, with four seriously injured.
The landmine attack on the bridge was aimed to cut the military’s supply route, said the chairman of KNU’s Alliance Supervision Committee to Than Lwin Times.
Kyoneate bridge is located on the main road section that links Yangon, Hpa-an, Mawlamyine and Myawady townships, and trucks are now stranded on this route. With tight security, the military is working to renovate the bridge.
Military analysts remark that the incident could lead to intense armed conflicts in Thahton district.
