Nyaunglaybin, 18 August

Six civilians, including two students, were killed and seven were injured in the last four days of artillery attack by the regime forces into the Brigade 3 of the Karen National Union (KNU) in Nyaunglaybin District, reported KNU on 17 August.

The military council’s battalions based in Nyaunglaybin District fired nearly 100 artillery rounds into Shwe Kyin, Mone and Kyaukkyi Townships in four days, from 13 to 16 August, targeting civilians.

On 13 August, junta shelling killed 13-year-old Saw El Kale Htoo and 16-year-old Saw Bo Lo Thee from Pe Thaung Village in Kyaukkyi Township, while 11-year-old Saw Khwar Si and 15-year-old Naw Bywe Bywe were seriously injured.

According to the statement, on 14 August, a heavy weapon fired by a Shwe Kyin-based junta unit exploded in the compound of the school in Inn Kat Palaik village, injuring one teacher and two children.

Meanwhile, on 16 August, the advanced regime troops launched a heavy weapon into Zalokegyi village, and Ko Maung Htwe, 60, and Ko Thant Zaw, 35, died from shrapnel wounds.

The fighting has been raging on between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and junta forces in July and August, with the junta carrying out repeated airstrikes, according to the statement.

According to the KNU, junta troops burned down over 20 houses in Nanza village, which has over 200 residences, during the conflict, and there are still uncounted houses that were damaged.
