Political detainees in Mon State’s Kyaikmaraw Central Prison are feeling sick as a result of climate change, but the availability of foreign medicine is restricted, sources close to the political prisoners told Than Lwin Times.
Climate change is making political prisoners sick, causing runny noses, coughs, heat rash, and skin diseases on a large scale.
The military council has prohibited family members from bringing foreign medicines to political prisoners infected with the disease, and prison authorities are only taking traditional drugs to a limited amount.
The military council has prohibited family members from bringing foreign medicines to political prisoners infected with the disease, and prison authorities are only taking Burmese drugs to a limited amount.
Furthermore, the source stated that those with chronic ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure are unable get foreign drugs, and that if they go to the jail authorities and ask for them, they will only receive paracetamol and burmeton.
According to Chapter (8) Sections 37, 38, 39 of the Prison Law, it is mandatory to provide appropriate health care to prisoners, but during the military council, prisoners are almost completely deprived of health care.
Former political prisoners said that although there is a hospital in the prison, the prisoners have to share medicine with each other as they are not seeing the doctors.
Family members are worried that the prisoners, who have been restricted from receiving food for the past few months, will now lose their right to receive medicine.
A political prisoner died a few days ago in Zay Ma Thwe Prison in Thaton Township, Mon State, because he did not receive health care, according to activists who assist political prisoners.
