Mawlamyine, September (18)
After the military coup, the rice prices surged to record highs as there had been fewer rice stocks in Mon State with the increased commodity prices, rice traders told Than Lwin Times.
In the second week of September, a bag of Paw Hsan rice rose to 70,000 kyats, a bag of Paw Kywe rice to almost 60,000 kyats, and a bag of Emahta, a variety of coarse rice, rose to about 50,000 kyats respectively.
A rice merchant said that with the ongoing increase in paddy prices, rice prices soared again as there is a shortage of rice stocks.
The price of rice may drop in the next two months due to the start of the winter season, but before that, the price may rise again, according to rice traders.
On the other hand, the price of rice is rising due to electricity outages, rising fuel prices, high transportation costs, and general costs.
In addition, rice farmers are facing rising general costs, including input goods such as fertilizer and fuel, and some farming operations are switching to low-cost direct seeding methods.
The country is facing various crises after the military coup on the pretext of voter fraud in the 2020 general election, and the coup leader is boasting that he will develop the agricultural sector.
