Mawlamyine, April (9 )
The Karen National Union (KNU) has suspended access to the Myawaddy-Kawkareik Asian Highway, however, the traders say they are taking risks and continuing to trade.
Due to increased military presence, the KNU has ordered the civilians to stop using the Myawaddy-Kawkareik Asian Highway and the Myawaddy-Wal Ley Road starting March 27.
On the Asian Highway, fighting between the KNLA and the military council has escalated in recent days, with trucks and passenger cars set on fire and four people dead.
Despite the fact that combat had escalated along that stretch of route, a dealer claimed that the trucks were taking risks.
“Fighting could resume at any time. The traders are also worried. Depending on the situation, we have to follow the example of others. As people buy and store goods out of concern, prices are rising again,” one of the dealers said.
Although such trade has resulted in an influx of Thai items, the commodity prices have continued to increase as the prices of trade rise.
Thai products have seen a price increase of at least Ks 1,000 to Ks 10,000 in the market, depending on the category.
Thailand exports basic foodstuffs, medicine, cosmetics, consumer goods and construction materials to Myanmar through the Myawaddy border while Myanmar imports corn and agricultural products.
