Yangon, November (26)

The military junta has perpetrated a variety of war crimes and crimes against humanity on women that have had devastating impacts on their health and safety, according to the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG)’s statement released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which falls on November 25.

The Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) said in a statement that there is an urgent need to fight  against all acts of psychological, physical and sexual violence perpetrated by the Military Council against women, and that women in Southeast Myanmar face various gender-based violence.

Following the 2021 military coup, the military council committed indiscriminate killings, arbitrary arrest and detention, torture, forced displacement, burning and looting of villages, using villagers as forced labor and human shields, as well as denying access to basic services and humanitarian assistance, said the statement.

Since the military takeover, more than 300,000 people have been displaced in Karen State, and women frequently have to evacuate with young children and care for them on their own with limited external assistance.

The displaced women in Karen State live in horrible conditions, with little to no access to clean water and health care for themselves and their children, while the women who remain in their villages face air strikes and other attacks by the junta, as well as a lack of basic necessities such as food and medicine.

The KHRG also called for the international community to place action into words, support civil society actions and work in the country, and develop a strong, concrete response to address all atrocities committed by the military regime, including sexual and other violence.
