The junta continues to expand its military presence after suffering heavy losses in the clashes that broke out in Kawkayeik, the White Tiger Squadron 1, an armed wing of the KNLA, told Than Lwin Times.
On December 27, there was a confrontation between junta forces and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) near Kawt Nwe village in Kawkayeik controlled by KNU Brigade 6, where tensions remain high.
After heavy losses at the battle, the military council has increased reinforcements, an official from the White Tiger Squadron 1 said.
On December 27, junta forces launched two airstrikes near Kawt Nwe village in Kawkayeik, fired mortar shells into the village, and set fire to houses, he added.
Due to the fighting in Kawkayeik, about 2,000 locals from six villages are currently seeking shelter, and they are in desperate need of food, medicine, and warm clothing, the relief workers said.
The clashes in Kawkayeik damaged three bridges and some sections of the road, nearly halting trade between Thailand and Myanmar.
